Consortium 2009 Highlights
6th Annual Consortium | NEW People. Perspectives. Possibilities.
Celebrating six years of networking and sharing best practices, this year’s Plan Sponsor & Minority Manager Consortium came at a critical time in the industry, one in which changes abound and a new regulatory environment is being discussed. With more than 300 in attendance, nearly 40% of the minority and emerging managers, plan sponsors, consultants and other industry influencers in attendance at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles were new to the forum. Both new participants and those who have benefited from attending the Consortium in the past contributed to the high energy, thoughtful discussions and valuable networking that occurred.
From the opening session, the fast-pace tempo was set. During our opening reception, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed all to Los Angeles and underscored the importance of working together and tapping all talent as a way to emerge from current economic challenges. Remarks by California State Controller John Chiang followed by a dynamic panel of plan sponsors moderated by Kelly Williams, Managing Director, Credit Suisse Customized Fund Investment Group set a fast-paced tone with insights and timely perspectives. Morning concurrent sessions addressed key operational issues facing the industry, as well as sector-specific trends in private equity, public equity, real estate and hedge. Luncheon remarks by Professor Edward Leamer, PhD, Senior Associate Dean and Director, Economic Report and Forecast at UCLA/Anderson Business Forecast helped put current trends and economic turmoil in perspective. The Consortium's afternoon VIP Connect provided an excellent forum for one-on-one discussions—and an opportunity to begin more in-depth dialogue among minority and emerging managers, fund of fund managers and plan sponsors.
"The Consortium provided an open forum for discussing relevant issues facing plan sponsors today, and allowed for personal and engaging networking opportunities for all attendees. The quality and number of attendees from both plan sponsors and minority managers was remarkable. Most impressive was the enthusiasm and passion for the support of diversity and emerging managers, putting this event in a category all its own. Terrific!"

Plan Sponsor–Only: Lively & Intense
The Consortium started with its traditional half–day, plan sponsor-only gathering–and this year drew a standing room–only crowd of participants from around the country all engaged and eager to share insights, best practices and find solutions for moving forward. Cheryl Alston, Executive Director of the Employees' Retirement Fund of the City of Dallas served as the chair of the Plan Sponsor–Only gathering. Her perspectives and leadership throughout the planning process and during the session were instrumental. The panel discussions addressed key issues facing plan sponsors, from the denominator factor and use of placement agents to interactions with emerging managers, specialty and niche area investment focused approaches. The afternoon’s global investor discussion proved engaging for all, from US–based plan sponsors to those representing non–US entities. Perspectives from UCLA Anderson School of Management Professor Alfred E. Osborne, Jr., Ph.D. provided valuable and candid perspectives on the current environment—and what’s ahead.

VIP Connect
With nearly 200 registered participants, the afternoon Value Information Partnership | VIP Connect (a long-standing part of the Consortium) sparked great dialogue and networking opportunities. Many of the plan sponsors in attendance participated, providing emerging managers with a tremendous opportunity for one–on–one dialogue. The new format, in which all participants select their meeting rotation via a first–come, first-served reservation system proved effective.
